5 Easy Ways to Protect Your Skin in Winter Months

I can’t remember a harsher, crazier winter than the one we’ve been experiencing here in Texas this year! I think we have seen every type of weather condition with exception to an earthquake. I’m okay with a little cold, and soft snowfall from time to time, but this unusual weather has not made friends with my skin. Being that I’ve never been good at applying lotion after a shower, I am loving my newest winter weather survival tool from Jergens with the Jergens Wet Skin Moisturizer.  This in shower moisturizer,  along with a few other tips I’ll share are going to be my skin’s saving grace to get me through this season.  Now don’t get me wrong, I do like some things about winter time……but dry, irritated skin is NOT one of them!

I picked up a couple of bottles of Jergens Wet Skin Moisturizer at my Walmart the other day while I was in the lotion aisle and decided to give it a try. Literally with the first use, my skin was so soft, it felt like I’d been using lotion for days really. I love the coconut oil scent the best, but I may be partial because I’m a little obsessed with coconut oil! I always forget to apply lotion after my showers, and it’s not until I’m already dressed and out the door and start itching that it ever even crosses my mind. I love that with Jergens Wet Skin Moisturizer it’s directly in my vision while I shower, so all I have to do is turn off my water, apply it, then step out and dry off like I normally do.

In addition to my new wet skin moisturizer, there are a few other things I try to do during the winter to salvage my skin and lips.

  1. Drink More Water – Water is really beneficial through the whole year.  It allows you to hydrate from the inside out.  During the winter, sometimes we don’t drink as much due to the cold, but it’s still necessary for hydration.
  2. Take your Omega’s – Whether you take an Omega 3 supplement or try to take in more with say…..almonds or fish, these contain the fatty acids that naturally make you skin softer and smoother.
  3. Turn down the water temperature – this is something I’m having to get used to because I LOVE hot showers.  However, Dr. Ben Behnam, Dermatologist (and many others) claim that by restricting showers to less than 5-10 minutes and lowing the temperature to lukewarm and not hot, it saves your skin from from drying out more.  Especially when you use a moisturizer right after your shower.
  4. Lip Balm – No matter where I’m at, I carry multiple tubes of lip balm.  I have a few favorites, and they really do wonders to keep your lips from chapping and cracking.
  5. Exfoliate on the regular – I love this one. Exfoliating has become something I do regularly now in my skin care routine.  It helps take off all those dead skin cells helping to build collagen and elastin (oh so good for your skin).

DIY Blueberry Sugar Scrub

When it comes to exfoliating, sometimes I use store bought, but sometimes I like to make my own. In the past I’ve used brown sugar scrubs and orange sugar scrubs, but this week I wanted to try something new to share with you! My Blueberry Sugar Scrub with coconut oil. Again, coconut oil……I told you I’m obsessed with it but there are so many great uses for it and they’re pretty much all great for you.Since we’re talking about winter skin, I had to use it because coconut oil is one of the most moisturizing ingredients out there. I have been reading up on skin benefits of blueberry as well and was excited to see that it actually is good for acne prone skin. I’m really excited to start using this one more and it’s so easy to make! Plus, purple is one of my favorite colors.

Want to make your own Homemade Blueberry Sugar Scrub?  It’s so simple and only takes 3 ingredients!

Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar (if you don’t like it as coarse, you can decrease to 1/2 cup)
  • 1/2 cup melted coconut oil
  • 1/3 cup fresh blueberries

Directions:

  • If you have a mortar and pestle, you can crush your blueberries.  I like to puree mine in a small blender just enough break them up.
