Being a single parent and the sole bill payer, it’s important for me to keep costs down on as many things as I can, especially when it comes to necessities like energy. I’m really fortunate to live in an area where I can select my energy provider from a list of several companies because of energy choice and deregulation. This allowed me to find one that was perfect for me a few years back with IGS Energy. Selecting the right energy provider was just one of the ways I save on the cost to power my home, however. There are a lot of ways you can control your energy costs during the summer months when costs seem to go up. 10 ways to save on energy costs:
- Unplug all unused devices – with 3 teenagers in the house, there are constantly chargers plugged into our outlets, and a lot of the time, there isn’t even a device on the other end of that charger. I’ve made it a point to check regularly for anything plugged in that isn’t being used from chargers, to even small appliances.
- Turn off lights – this is another thing I’ve had to start practicing. Nothing bothers me more than rooms with lights left on when there is no one in there. TURN THEM OFF!
- Invest in energy saving appliances. One of my smartest investments was a washer and dryer combo that is an energy saver (and water). It may cost you a little to switch appliances, but it saves you over time.
- Change your filters regularly to keep your ac units running smoothly
- Keep the areas in front of your vents clear
- Energy saving window treatments can help to keep the inside of our homes cooler, thus making that ac kick in less often. Also, make it a point to weather proof your home with weather-strip, seals, caulking your leaky doors etc
- Reposition your fridge – did you know that by moving your refrigerator away 4″ from the wall could save up to 25% of it’s energy use? I didn’t.
- Line dry your clothes when possible
- If you’re in an area that gets cool at night, open up those windows and turn off the ac
- Choose (or re-evaluate) your energy provider for affordable options on natural gas and electric supply products
If you’re not familiar with Energy Choice programs, these are approved in certain states (I’m in Texas) and allow customers the ability to purchase electricity and/or natural gas from an independent energy supplier – these are considered “deregulated states”. Traditionally consumers didn’t have a choice as to who supplied their energy, the local utility served all the residents within that territory. Today, though, we are able to shop around and choose a supplier that best suits our needs. When looking for the right energy provider for myself, in addition to price options I also like to see how community involved a company is. IGS Energy has served me well the last several years and I love how they give back to the community. With IGS Energy, I was not only able to find a great price for my energy, but I am able to get that price locked in so that it stays the same no matter how costs fluctuate through the year. You can see more about IGS Companies community support on their Facebook and Instagram pages. Disclaimer: IGS Customer actual results may vary IGS Energy serves over one million customers, and in addition to supplying energy and natural gas, they also offer a wide range of home protection products to help customers protect their budgets against costly repairs of the utility lines that keep their homes running smoothly. If you’re looking to go green, they have green energy options as well. I remember when we had to go through a utility company for our energy and the monthly bills were outrageous. With IGS Energy they have been nearly cut in half. Any time I’ve ever had to call about my account, the customer service has always been very friendly and knowledgeable.
