Living with arthritis, or joint pain, can be frustrating, and very limiting and although I’ve not been diagnosed with it myself, I do suffer from joint pain from past injuries. My problem joints are mostly in my knees and my shoulders. I accredit most of my pain from all my years of playing tennis, maybe some dirt bike accidents, and having been overweight and not as active as I needed to be for too long. I spent a lot of my younger years not taking care of myself and trust and believe it all hit me once I reached my 30’s. These days I make a conscious effort to take better care of myself because I refuse to let my joint pain hold me back. Have you ever heard the saying “The less you do, the less you feel like doing“? I believe that!
Did you know that May is National Arthritis Month? In fact, there are 53 million people in the US alone that suffer from arthritis. I know that everyone’s joint pain is different and their own and each person has their own ways to manage it, but if you would like to learn more about arthritis and how to manage it, you might find this Better Living Toolkit useful.
One of my favorite things to do is play tennis, and I’ve played since I was about 12. Unfortunately though, I’ve stayed clear of the sport the last few years because of my knees. My Step Dad has been asking me for years to partner with him in the Spring tennis league he plays in, and this year I said YES! As badly as I wanted to get out there and play before, there were a couple things holding me back, my weight and my knees. I dropped the weight, which helped a ton with my knee pain. For the little discomfort that I do still experience from time to time, I keep Advil for that.
While at Walmart the other day, I noticed they have these Advil EZ Open bottles that are perfect for people struggling with Arthritis. You can also find Nexium 24HR EZ Open if you suffer from heartburn. I have to purchase this often for my teen son. While he doesn’t need an easy open cap, he does appreciates the heartburn relief .
In addition to Advil however, there are some other things I try to do to minimize my joint pain.
- Control my weight: It’s amazing the difference even losing just a little bit of weight made a difference in my knees. Whether you realize it or not, carrying excess weight around can stress your joints. You don’t have to do strenuous activities, simply trying to walk more several times a week can help.
- Drink plenty of water – Keeping hydrated has tons of benefits. One big one when it comes to joint pain is that keeping hydrated helps your body to maintain an adequate blood volume. This helps the nutrients needed move through your blood into your joints. Lubricated joints (synovial fluid) help joints move a lot smoother.
- Manage Stress – I have severe anxiety, and I’ve noticed that at it’s worst, it triggers not just emotional stress, but also can cause your body to respond with physiologic responses. Which in turn can cause the joint pain to worsen.
- Vitamins – When I was younger I refused to take vitamins because they made me sick. A few years ago, I found some great vitamins that I could tolerate, and noticed a big difference in how much better I felt all around. Vitamins are just good for your whole body, including bones and joints.
- Ice Packs – On days I’ve been really active, sometimes the pain in my joints can be a bit much. I’ve found that icing the area helps tremendously.
- Keep Stocked in Advil – Advil is my go to for many things from fevers to joint pain. Most times when my joints hurt, it’s inflammation, which is what Advil is great for! As a matter of fact, nothing’s proven stronger on Arthritis and other joint pain.* The medicine in Advil is the one doctors recommend most for joint pain. More than the medicine in Tylenol or Aleve.**
Bottom line, if you’re letting your arthritis or joint pain keep you from doing the things you love the most, STOP! Learn more about it and take action to feel the best that you can despite it and get back to living. You can find the Advil EZ Open bottles at your Walmart near the pharmacy!
- Disclaimer: Ask a doctor before use if you have a history of stomach problems, such as heartburn.
- *For minor arthritis pain. Among OTC pain relievers.
- **Based on a survey of monthly doctor recommendations.
What activities would you love to do more with the help of Advil for?
